Weekend Chat Variations with Google Jamboard

I want to begin this post with GRATITUDE to Bethany Drew for generously sharing here weekend chat place mats in Spanish & French for the longest.

These are amazing chat place mats that support student output when discussing what they did over the weekend on Mondays, which is exactly what THE WEEKEND CHAT is.

In a regular year, there are so many ways to approach the weekend chat. You can simply project the place mat and conduct a comprehensible personalized question and answer session for as long as the students are excited about the topic.

Some teachers, such as Allison from Mis Clases Locashave come up and written blog posts about amazing variations of this powerful activity.

But this isn’t a normal year, we have distance learning, hybrid teaching, and even social distance to keep in mind if you do have the opportunity of teaching face to face, but here comes Jamboard to save the day! With this highly interactive whiteboard, you can make the weekend chat so possible under any learning setting!

Here are some possible weekend chat ideas with Jamboard:

Host a 4 Corners Session

Honestly, most of the interactive activities and games that you can do in the classroom, you can do with Jamboard!

During a live session, you can have the students move to each corner and you can ask them follow up questions. As an extension, you can ask them to write out their sentence.

Use It as Your Monday Warm Up Activity

Provide the support students need with Bethany’s chat place mat and have students write something they did over the weekend. You can follow it up with personalized questions and answers, or a type of “guess who?” game where you make a statement and have students guess who that statement applies to.

Play Two Truths and 1 Lie

My friend Christina Margiore, aka Super Señora, caught my Jamboard fever 😁 too! Beware, because you just might 😉. She tried the weekend chat, but she did a two truths and one lie variations. You simply have students write two truths and one lie, and you can guide the discussion until the class discovers all of the lies. This high engagement whiteboard activity is also a great way to build community in this distance learning environment with this interactive white board.
