Cinco de Mayo It's Here Again!
Can you believe it? It has been a year since I shared with you a set of Cinco de Mayo readings about its history for novice mid learners+. Last year, I received a lot of great feedback from these Cinco de Mayo lesson plans for Spanish class. It made my day that through my work, I was able to save educators time with an engaging Cinco de Mayo lesson. I don’t say that to toot my own horn, but rather because I want to get these free lessons in the hands of more people. It really brings me joy to be able to contribute and help out with a grain of salt.
So, if you and I weren’t connected at this time last year, please go grab these free cinco de Mayo resources! You will be super glad that you did! This blog entry from last year also explains how I feel about creating opportunity for conversations about this often misunderstood holiday.
Take Cinco de Mayo to Another Level This Year
I am not going to talk about music or class parties, nor am I criticizing these. Me encanta el reventón, but I like to think that if educators are hosting parties during this holiday it is only after a clear meaning of this date has been established.
I want to bring light to the following question today with regards to Cinco de Mayo in Spanish class:
What can I do in my classroom today to lead my students to become ambassadors of this holiday?
This is a question I often ask myself about any holiday happening in a target culture, but because I am from Mexico and I have witnessed some moments among around this holiday in particular, the question definitely hits differently.
Here are some ideas you may find helpful:
#1 - Talk to Them About the Real History of the Holiday
#2 - Take Them on a Tour to Fall in Love with Puebla Mexico
#3 - Explain to Them How It Has Become Such a Big Holiday to Mexican People in Some Parts of the United States
#4 - Encourage Them to Start Conversations with Family & Friends about What This Holiday Really Represents
#5 - Identify & Show Them How They Can Support Local Mexican Businesses in Your Town
